Early Days: From Mombasa’s Beach Hotels to Afro Fusion

Makadem’s musical journey began humbly as a cover artist post-high school, marking the inception of his career when his late brother, Albert Ademson, recognized his potential. Initially delving into foreign and African covers, Makadem’s trajectory shifted towards rap, leading him to craft his compositions and master the guitar. His early creations, known as Anglo-Benga/Anglo-Ohangla, reflected a blend of Luo language with the English of a village boy. Read Also: Top five Afrobeat artists rocking the global scene

A pivotal moment arrived when Makadem transitioned from Mombasa to Nairobi, seeking a studio and encountering Tabu Osusa of Ketebul Music. Although studios were initially reluctant to collaborate, Tabu’s interest in Makadem’s unique blend of Anglo-Ohangla and Anglo-Benga marked a turning point. This encounter redirected Makadem towards Afro-fusion, a genre where he would carve his distinctive niche.

The Evolution: Afro-Fusion and Socio-Economic Narratives

Post-high school, Makadem’s musical exploration resulted in multiple albums fusing Benga and Ohangla styles. Collaborating with Tabu Osusa, metamorphosed his music from dancehall to a unique Afro-fusion. His debut CD, ‘Ohanglaman‘ (2007), solidified this transformation, addressing socio-economic issues, relationships, and societal reflections.

Makadem’s talent propelled him on extensive tours across Africa and Europe, gracing festivals and sharing stages with luminaries like Gregory Isaacs and Glen Washington. His international recognition peaked in 2008 with ‘Obama Be Thy Name,’ a song expressing support for Barack Obama’s presidential bid. This propelled him into global consciousness, with the video gaining attention from CNN during the campaign.

His illustrious career boasts achievements such as opening for Seun Kuti in Copenhagen (2011) and performing at the Cannes Film Festival in France (2012). The year 2014 saw the formation of a touring trio, presenting the enthralling show ‘Romo‘ and headlining the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, DC.

Choosing Nyatiti: A Quest for Uniqueness

“I began the Nyatiti in 2014 and only got serious with it in 2017 when I made a decision that this is it for me… Earlier on, I played acoustic guitar, Kalimba (thumb piano ), kayamba, and, of course, sang as well.”

In 2014, Makadem’s musical journey took a unique turn with a newfound commitment to the Nyatiti. Describing it as a pivotal decision in 2017, he emphasizes the significance of uniqueness in music. Nyatiti, a traditional Kenyan instrument, became his tool for captivating audiences globally. Its soothing, spiritual, and trance-inducing sound sets him apart in a world where standing out is paramount. Read Also: African fashion: The unique tapestry of heritage and creativity

Makadem’s mastery of the Nyatiti led to collaborations with international DJ producers in a genre he terms ‘NyatitiTronik.’ However, he remains selective in collaborations, viewing them more as a business module than a creative wellspring. This principle defines his approach to music, reinforcing his brand identity while enriching the global music scene with Nyatiti’s captivating sounds.
