Senegalese stars, Sadio Mane, and Ismailia Sarr shine, while Cameroon’s biggest star Andre Onana, has a night to forget in Cameroon National colors. Senegal secured a spot in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations knockout stages with a convincing 3-1 win against Cameroon on Friday at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro. Ismailia Sarr and Sadio Mane delivered an impressive performance, leading the Lions of Teranga past the Indomitable Lions. Goals from Sarr, Mane, and Habib Diallo contributed to Senegal’s victory, while Jean-Charles Castelletto scored Cameroon’s lone goal. Unfortunately, Cameroon’s star player, Andre Onana, had a forgettable evening as Senegal humiliated Cameroon at AFCON 2023.
Game Analysis
Ismaila Sarr scored in the 16th minute to give Senegal the lead, and Habib Diallo doubled the advantage in the middle of the second half. Jean-Charles Castelletto’s header brought Cameroon back into the game with seven minutes remaining, creating a tense finish.
However, George-Kevin Nkoudou missed a crucial opportunity to equalize with a free header, and Sadio Mane secured the victory for Senegal in stoppage time.
Cameroon, who are five-time continental champions, currently have one point after two games. To likely advance to the knockout stages, they will need to win their final group match against The Gambia on Tuesday.
Andre Onana’s Performance as Senegal Humiliates Cameroon at AFCON 2023
While he wasn’t directly responsible for the goals, some believe he could have done more to prevent all three. The Manchester United goalkeeper made his first appearance in this edition after arriving late, causing him to miss Cameroon’s recent one-all draw with Guinea. Now, Cameroon must defeat Gambia in their final group-stage match to have any hope of reaching the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, Senegal will conclude their group-stage matches with a game against Guinea next week.
