Forget about the COVID-19 pandemic for a while, loneliness could be the next epidemic and is a growing public health concern around the globe. Loneliness can entail spending time alone for a lengthy period, losing a loved one, experiencing financial problems, physical isolation as well as changing your living arrangements.   But did you know that loneliness damages health?

Research paints gloom on the effects of the lack of social connection and international bodies are getting increasingly concerned about its global impact. While some people may assume it is a normal way to live their lives, it has negative impacts on health.

What the World Health Organization (WHO) says about loneliness

The body believes the problem transcends borders and affects several people. Loneliness damages health with some Surgeons equating it to smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

According to WHO, one in four older people experience social isolation. The statistic is similar across several regions. The problem affects people of all ages. The organization contends that between 5 percent and 15 percent of adolescents experience social isolation.

As part of an effort to address what is slowly degenerating into a global problem, The Guardian reports that the organization has established a Commission to find a solution to the problem. The Commission consists of 11 leading policy-makers, thought leaders, and advocates. African Union is also not spared by the problem and they are among those who will co-chair the commission alongside US Surgeon General, Dr Vivek Murthy to address the problem.
