Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga declared his candidacy for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission on Thursday. This announcement coincided with the conclusion of the tenure of the current chair, Moussa Faki of Chad. Raila Odinga bid for AUC chair represents a changing milestone in Kenyan and African politics.
In his statement, Raila asserted that he is a suitable candidate for the position. The declaration aligned with the ordinary session of the AU’s Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Foreign Affairs CS Musalia Mudavadi is expected to garner support for Raila’s bid.
“I publicly declare my readiness to vie for the chairmanship of the African Union… I am prepared to embrace the challenge. If the leadership of Africa desires my services, I am available to contribute to this continent,” Raila stated.

President William Ruto Supports Raila’s Bid
The process requires a candidate for the AU Commission chairman to be endorsed by a member state, and President Ruto’s administration will lead Raila’s candidacy.
If successful, Raila’s role as AU Commission chair would necessitate his exit from Kenya’s political arena. The position mandates neutrality on matters related to development, conflicts, and politics across Africa, making Raila a significant player in international affairs.
This would also restrict his involvement in Kenya’s political scene in 2027, allowing only participation as an ordinary voter, not as a campaigner or candidate. Active participation in the election would require relinquishing the AU Commission position.
Assuming the chairmanship in January 2025, Raila would serve a four-year term, ending in 2028, a year after Kenya’s next general election.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei expressed President William Ruto’s administration’s readiness to support Raila’s bid, emphasizing the ministry’s commitment to facilitating the candidature of qualified Kenyans in international organizations.
The Azimio coalition, composed of several parties, would need to find a new leader, and other coalition principals eyeing leadership ahead of the 2027 elections would need to adjust their plans.
The Orange Democratic Movement party would also need to prepare for a future without the active participation of Raila.
In his role at the AUC, Raila would serve as the Chief Executive Officer, Legal Representative, and Accounting Officer. His responsibilities include chairing Commission meetings, facilitating AU organ meetings, and ensuring conformity with agreed policies and strategies.
Raila would also oversee diplomatic representation for the AU, supervise the Commission’s administration and finances, and prepare annual reports on AU activities, demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to the effective functioning of the AU.

The former President emphasised the value of individuals with prior head of government experience.
“We believe that individuals who have held positions at the level of Prime Minister will be able to engage with incumbent Prime Ministers and Presidents effectively. Such individuals are likely to be well-suited for this role at this particular time,” Obasanjo remarked. “I do not doubt that my friend (Raila) could easily be a viable candidate.”
