Initially, Athletics Kenya planned the trials for February 16-17. However, they postponed the trials to honor the late world marathon record holder, Kelvin Kiptum. He passed along with his Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana, in a car accident on February 11.
Kiptum’s funeral is scheduled for Friday, while Hakizimana’s burial is set for Wednesday. AK explained in a statement “The event will be held on March 5 and 6 at the Nyayo Stadium. AK will select a team to represent the country at the African Games in Accra, Ghana.”

Furthermore, they have scheduled the national cross-country championship, initially planned for a different date, to take place on March 2 at the Kenya Prisons Staff Training College in Ruiru. This event serves as the platform to select the team representing Kenya at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, scheduled for March 30.
As of the latest information available, Dr Johansen Oduor, the chief government pathologist, was conducting a post-mortem on the body of the late world marathon record holder at Eldoret Hospital. Forensic experts and analysts from the Homicide Unit of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations conducted the autopsy. Others include forensic experts and analysts from the government chemist. Kiptum’s family members were present during the procedure.
During the same period, the offices of Athletics Kenya remain closed on Thursday and Friday to mark respect for the late Kelvin Kiptum.
They have scheduled Kiptum’s funeral for Friday, February 23, 2024, in Chepkorio Village, Elgeyo Marakwet. Athletics Kenya indicated that regular office activities resume on Monday, February 26, after the burial.
